Nov 24: Volkswagen struggling with S.Africa costs as group targets savings - executive

A senior Volkswagen executive involved in a global cost-cutting strategy said on Friday he was "very worried" about the future of the company's operations in South Africa, which is fighting persistent power cuts and logistics snarls.

The German automaker has been in South Africa for nearly 80 years. Factors like competitive labour costs once placed it among the company's higher-ranking bases globally, VW brand chief Thomas Schaefer said during a visit to the country.

But the costs of mitigating power outages caused by chronic production shortfalls at state-owned utility Eskom as well as rising labour costs and logjams on railways and at ports have eroded that advantage, he said.

๐Ÿ“‰๐ŸŒ International businesses are finding it increasingly more difficult to deal with the problems caused by South Africa.

Increases in labour costs and disputes, an electrical grid that only provides power for half the day, and crumbling transport infrastructure are key points mentioned by multiple companies who are looking to minimise their footprint at the southern tip of Africa.

Last month a congestion nightmare hit South Africa's busiest ports operated by the state-owned Transnet. The port of Durban had a backlog of more than 70 ships carrying more than 60 000 TEU containers anchored off the coast. The Durban backlog is only expected to be cleared in March.

Some of the world's largest shipping companies added extra fees to the cost of transporting shipping containers to South Africa due to the congestion at the ports. Shipping giants like Maersk and CMA CGM added between $200 and $400 per container. South Africans will be coughing up 28% more than the global average.

In a recent Department of Transport report, the government admits that port performance resulted in an increase of shipments to be diverted to the ports of Luanda in Angola and Maputo in Mozambique.

Volumes on the coal-rail line to the export terminal at Richards Bay are at their lowest since 1993, iron-ore railings are at the weakest in a decade and general freight volumes have fallen even further.

South Africa isn't heading for a competency crisis โ€” it is deep within one.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ SA chooses Russia's Gazprom to revive refinery

State-owned oil company PetroSA has selected Russian state-owned financier Gazprombank as its preferred investor partner to resuscitate its gas-to-liquid fuel refinery in Mossel Bay.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni announced on Monday that the Cabinet had endorsed the decision and aimed to finalise the transaction by April 2024, pending due diligence and the development of the business case.

Ntshavheni said the government had sought a state-to-state arrangement, and the tender process was run by PetroSA. Investigative reporting unit Amabhungane reported in November that the request for proposals was designed to give state-owned companies extra points in scoring the tender. It also set a very high threshold for bidders to qualify as preferred with the result that 19 out of 20 bidders were disqualified.

PetroSA's closed its gas-to-liquid fuel refinery in 2020 after it ran out of feedstock. PetroSA and the Central Energy Fund (CEF), its parent company, hope that they will be able to use new gas discoveries off the coast of SA. The plant converts both gas and condensate to vehicle fuel.

CEF has pinned hopes for PetroSA's turnaround to reviving the refinery.

The 16th of December marks the anniversary of the Battle of Blood River, where a small group of Boers, numbering less than 500, successfully defended themselves against a larger force of Zulus estimated to be between 15,000 and 30,000 in size. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Boers emerged victorious with only three injuries, while the Zulus suffered thousands of deaths.

Before the battle, the Boers made a vow to God, promising to build a church and observe the day of their victory as an annual Sabbath if God protected them and delivered the enemy into their hands. Since then, the Boers have celebrated the 16th of December as the Day of the Vow (Geloftedag) to honor this promise.

The Battle of Blood River and the preceding Vow are significant to the Boer people as they symbolize the origin myth of the Boer volk, who overcame great adversity and conquered harsh terrain through faith in God.
